Movement Disorders: A Closer Look

Movement disorders are conditions that affect the ability to produce and control movement. This can manifest as weakness, too forceful, or uncoordinated movement. In some of the conditions the patient can have uncontrolled movements at rest. A careful medical history and a thorough physical and neurological examination are needed to help diagnose movement disorders. Video recording of the abnormal movements can be helpful in further assessing the movement pattern and monitoring the progress and change to treatment.

Treatments can include physical and occupational therapy (for control, strength, and posture), drug therapy (oral medications such as levadopa for Parkinson’s Disease), local injections (such as botulinum injections for dystonia and spasticity), destruction of peripheral nerves through injection of phenol. Surgical treatment is also available for certain conditions.
