Winter Checklist: Are you Ready for the Winter Storm?

It won’t happen again this year right? Our office has only had to close twice in 25 years. Will the winter weather dump snow on us again this year? Either way, it is always good to be prepared and thanks to the Red Cross, we have great tips to share with you on how to make sure you are ready and will stay safe.

As we all know, winter storms may begin slowly with beautiful dustings or with large flakes which accumulate in a matter of hours. It is important to pay attention to the weather advisories, watches and warnings on your local channels and national weather channels. It is also important to have the supplies you need BEFORE the storm hits.

Suggested Supplies

  • Water- 1 gallon per person per day

  • Food- 3 day supply of non-perishable, easy to prepare food

  • Flashlight WITH extra batteries

  • First Aid kit

  • Medications (7 day supply is recommended and other medical items such as hearing aids with extra batteries, contact lenses, cane, etc)

  • Sanitation and personal hygiene products

  • Cell phone with charger

  • Multi-purpose tool as well as tools and supplies for securing home

  • Family and emergency contact information

  • Baby supplies if applicable (wipes, formula, baby food, bottles, diapers)

  • Pet supplies if applicable (collar, leash, food, carrier, bowl, water)

  • Extra cash

  • Sand, rock salt or kitty litter for walkways

  • Coats, hats, gloves, boots and extra blankets for all house members

  • Alternate heating methods such as fireplaces or wood burning stoves. Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal burning device in a home. This could lead to Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Click here to discover more information on Carbon Monoxide precautions

Once again, be sure to grab these things before storm time, knowing if you wait, you may find the shelves are empty or you are stuck in a storm. Click here for more information of how to be winter storm ready and for the source of this article.
