Heel pain

Heel Pain: A Closer Look

Heel Pain Look

Your feet are designed to handle a heavy load, but too much stress can have a negative effect. One negative effect is heel pain.

Heel pain in general is not disease, but usually an underlying symptom caused from:

  • Poorly fitted shoes that lack cushion and support, placing more pressure on the heel
  • A prolonged period of time on your feet, usually on concrete or other hard surfaces
  • Overuse: Long walks and marathons
  • Sprains, strains, or trauma to the foot or ankle

Heel pain can generally be resolved by:

  • Resting and elevating your feet as much as possible for a few days
  • Icing your heel to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Shoes that are supportive and provide adequate cushion
  • Stretching and exercising your foot and ankle
  • Shoe inserts or orthotics
  • Avoid walking on uneven surfaces
