Heel Pain: A Closer Look
Your feet are designed to handle a heavy load, but too much stress can have a negative effect. One negative effect is heel pain.
Heel pain in general is not disease, but usually an underlying symptom caused from:
- Poorly fitted shoes that lack cushion and support, placing more pressure on the heel
- A prolonged period of time on your feet, usually on concrete or other hard surfaces
- Overuse: Long walks and marathons
- Sprains, strains, or trauma to the foot or ankle
Heel pain can generally be resolved by:
- Resting and elevating your feet as much as possible for a few days
- Icing your heel to reduce swelling, inflammation, and pain
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Shoes that are supportive and provide adequate cushion
- Stretching and exercising your foot and ankle
- Shoe inserts or orthotics
- Avoid walking on uneven surfaces
