There are several medical issues and complications that are common to patients who have suffered an injury to the brain or spinal cord (central nervous system). These patients can have problems with weakness in the limbs, difficulty with communication, problems with spasticity, skin issues, bowel and bladder dysfunction, pain, and impaired mobility and self-cares. The rehabilitation specialist attempts to accurately diagnose the medical and functional conditions before implementing an appropriate rehabilitation program. This often includes therapy to help with mobility and activities of daily living, durable medical equipment / assistive devices (for example cane, wheelchair, walker, braces/orthotics, etc.), and other medical interventions to optimize function.
